About the event
The bicycle industry is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the word “Pedelec” (Pedal Electric Cycle) this year. Coined and introduced in 1999, “pedelec” once served to distinguish between the throttle-controlled and the pedal-powered types of electric bicycles. The first category already existed in the 1930s. The second category was introduced to Europe from Japan in the early 90s. With “pedelec” it was given its own name at a time when e-bike, as a vehicle and as a word, was far away from being socially acceptable.
Susanne Brüsch, who coined the term, will take the audience on a journey through time starting from the invention of the motorized bicycle, to it's naming, into the future of the e-bike market. What are the learnings from history and their value for the mobility of tomorrow?
